Altec 416 against JBL 130

Both are older designs with several variations.
Price is in the eye of the beholder and specifically what one's needs are. Generally I seen them go for about the same $ in Ebay.

The early 130 versions had a very close tolerance in the VC gap and often locked the voice coil when overheated. Early failure when used in Fender 100 watt showman guitar amps led to the JBL 130F version. This included several modifications including wider VC gap, stiffer heavier cone and more durable surround. Doing so reduced sensitivity slightly. Some swear by the older version for smaller guitar amp use. Actually the driver's freq response is not flat and therefore only fair for HIFI purposes. Early info is somewhat confusing as to the different variations ie 130 vs 130A etc and wether edge wound cupper or Aluminun was used, length of the VC etc.

The 416 and its predecesor the 803 are discussed here in detail do a search. Briefly they are more HIFI oriented than the 130 but they are very sensitive and would make excellent guitar amp speakers as well. All 416s are very close in performance although the 416B with the 16" frame and new magnet structure seems to be the "best". 416 vs 515 in general 416 have deeper bass than 515s which have more resolving mids.
